How Can We Protect Our Oceans During Spring Break?
Spring break is here again, and we know what that means - a much-needed vacation and partying away from the hustle of student life. But this year, things are set to be a little different from the usual. The pandemic comes with a new set of social restrictions, and schools around the country may forgo spring break altogether - yikes!
But as Founding Father John Adams said, “every problem is an opportunity in disguise.” At this point, you may be scratching your collective heads and wondering, “opportunity? Really now?” And here is the part where we (Team Pirani Life) will nod and say, “yes, and it’s a HUGE opportunity at that!”.
A Little History
So we all know that Spring Break rocks. It’s a time to have memorable beach parties, forget about the stress, and let the good times roll. Yet, there is an ugly side to it (sorry, partygoers, but it’s the unsweetened truth). Every year, we dread the Spring Break celebrations due to the sheer number of trash that party-goers leave on our beaches - party fouls like red solo cups, beer cans, and the occasional flip-flop.

It might not seem like much when a single person does it, but when you magnify the pollution by thousands, the impact is scary! Thousands upon thousands of sea life get killed from plastic pollution in the beaches and oceans - and such practices continue despite the hefty fines "imposed" by local authorities.( Click here to see the aftermath of spring break in Miami Beach documented by our friends at Clean This Beach Up.)
But this year, we thought perhaps things could take a turn for the better. Fewer parties may result in less trash, and Mama N might finally enjoy the Spring Break that she rightfully deserves. We understand it all sounds pretty harsh, but we assure you, we love parties too! It’s just that we believe in having fun without going at the expense of nature. And we know you do too!
Quick Tips If You're Partying This Spring
For those of you going ahead with your Spring Break as planned, we have some simple tips to help you #PartySustainably.
#1 - Choose Reusables for the Win
We say this a lot, but it’s true that switching out disposable plastic cups with reusable drinkware like the Pirani tumbler can make a massive difference in the environment. Plus, our insulated tumblers come in a wide variety of colors to suit your preference. It's like your Yeti and red Solo cup had a baby! Pirani cups will keep your beverages cool or hot longer than boring disposables to last you through the party.

#3 - Stay Sharp
We admit to enjoying a couple of cold ones in a celebration. But, hey, it’s not rocket science that we make the most meaningful decisions with a clear mind. Drinking in moderation at the beaches could pave the way for more responsible parties and reduced pollution.

It’s easy to ignore or forget about the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. By consciously basking in sun in paradise, you’ll feel inspired to protect it. That’s why we do the things we do here at Pirani Life!
And there you have it, it's that easy! Our list could serve as a reminder that you can share with your friends and fellow partygoers. Maybe jot it down inside your journal, sharpie it onto your palm, or snap a screenshot! Together, we can celebrate spring sustainably and give our planet its long-overdue break.
